VDL Container Systems was at a turning point. They didn't just want to launch a new generation of skip loaders; they also wanted to take a step forward in how they bring their products to market.
The ambition went beyond a single product. The goal: to lay the foundation for a new way of thinking, in which every future product is given its own identity, with a sharp positioning that aligns with the reality of the market.
Only… that positioning didn't exist yet.
Instead of starting directly with content, we went back to the core: what truly makes this new generation different and relevant?
We set up an intensive process with sales, management, and product development, based on a value proposition canvas. By zooming in on the entire DMU – from strategic buyer to fleet manager and driver – a complete picture of the market and its actual needs emerged.
One direction became clear: no focus on speed or features, but on durability, reliability, and long-term value.
From this, the positioning was born:

A system not designed to meet the standard, but to structurally exceed it.
With a clear positioning as a foundation, we were able to accelerate. We developed a complete launch concept in which everything comes together:
The creative concept for the film aligned perfectly with the positioning and was approved immediately. From that moment on, everything accelerated.
The real challenge was time: the first prototypes were only available a few weeks before the launch. This meant we had to handle the entire production, develop all assets, and ensure everything came together in one consistent line within an extremely short timeframe.
From the first shot to final delivery, everything served a single story.
Stratus was unveiled at VDL's headquarters in their cinema. VDL Container Systems brought together dealers from the Netherlands, Germany, and England for a presentation where the positioning, film, and product flowed seamlessly into one another.
But it didn't stop with visuals. In addition to the launch film, dealers were able to experience the system physically: a live demonstration and training sessions made Stratus tangible. This brought the story to life not just on screen, but on the floor as well. Promise and proof, at one moment and in one place.
- A distinctive positioning that separates Stratus from the price and feature discussions in the market
- A consistent visual identity and brand message across all touchpoints
- A launch concept that was fully realized in an extremely short timeframe
- A scalable foundation: a product architecture in which every subsequent system receives its own recognizable identity
This case demonstrates that a strong product launch begins before the product itself. By first sharpening the positioning—together with the people who know the market best—we created a foundation that allowed all creative work to accelerate. The focus wasn't on specifications, but on the meaning behind them.
The result is more than just a launched product. Stratus laid the foundation for a new way of product thinking at VDL Container Systems, where every future system builds upon the same sharp, recognizable brand logic.
Exactly where strong industrial brands make the difference.
